Bariatric Transportation in Ontario
Total Care Transport provides non-emergency bariatric medical transportation across Southern Ontario. We have the reinforced equipment, purpose-built vehicles and trained two-person crews to transport bariatric patients safely, comfortably and with complete dignity. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week across Halton, Brampton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Etobicoke.
Bariatric Transport Equipment and Capability
Bariatric transport requires specialised equipment that standard NEMT vehicles do not carry. Our bariatric capability includes:
-
Reinforced stretchers rated for higher weight capacity
-
Wide-body vehicle access for comfortable boarding and transport
-
Two trained driver-attendants on every bariatric transfer
-
Stair chair capability for buildings without elevator access
-
Portable oxygen where required
When you call to book, let us know the patient's approximate weight and any specific mobility or positioning requirements. We will confirm the right vehicle and crew for your transfer before the booking is finalised.

Who Needs Bariatric Medical Transportation
Bariatric transport is appropriate for patients whose weight or size means standard NEMT vehicles and equipment are not suitable. Common situations include:
-
Hospital discharge for bariatric patients who cannot sit upright
-
Inter-facility transfers between hospitals, rehabilitation centres or long-term care homes
-
Bariatric surgical consultations and post-operative follow-up appointments
-
Ongoing medical appointments for patients with limited mobility
Dignity and Discretion
We understand that for many bariatric patients, arranging medical transport involves concerns beyond logistics. Our driver-attendants are trained to approach every bariatric transfer with professionalism, patience and complete discretion. We do not rush, we do not draw unnecessary attention, and we treat every patient the way we would want a family member treated.
If you have specific requests about how we approach the transfer, tell us when you book. We will accommodate them.

Bariatric Transportation FAQ
What weight capacity can you accommodate?
Call us with the patient's approximate weight and we will confirm whether we can accommodate the transfer and which vehicle and equipment we will use. We will always be straightforward with you about our capability for your specific situation.
Do you require advance notice for bariatric transfers?
We recommend as much notice as possible for bariatric transfers so we can confirm the right vehicle and crew. Same-day bookings are available but advance notice allows us to plan properly and ensure the best outcome for the patient.
Can a family member travel with the patient?
Yes. A family member or escort is welcome to ride along at no extra charge. Let us know at booking so we can ensure space.
Do you provide bariatric stretcher transport?
Yes. For bariatric patients who cannot sit upright, we provide reinforced stretcher transport with a two or three-person crew. Let us know at booking that stretcher transport is required and confirm the patient's approximate weight so we can assign the appropriate equipment.
Can you transport a patient who was just discharged from surgery?
Yes. Post-surgical patients who cannot sit upright require stretcher transport. We have two-person stretcher teams available for this. Let us know at booking that the patient is post-surgical and we will assign the appropriate vehicle and crew.
Is bariatric transport covered by OHIP or insurance?
Hospital to hospital transfers ordered by a physician are typically covered under OHIP. Other transfers are generally not covered. Programs that may help include the iCare Transportation Fund and ODSP for eligible recipients. We provide receipts and documentation for all trips.
