Wheelchair Transfer FAQ
What types of wheelchairs can you accommodate?
We accommodate most standard manual wheelchairs and many power wheelchairs. If you use a bariatric wheelchair or a very large power chair, let us know at booking so we can confirm the right vehicle. We will always tell you upfront if we cannot accommodate a specific chair type.
Can I bring my own wheelchair or do you provide one?
Patients can travel in their own wheelchair. We do not provide wheelchairs for transport. If you require us to provide a wheelchair please let us know upon booking, and we will do what we can to accomodate.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We recommend booking as early as possible. For recurring appointments such as dialysis, we can set up your full schedule with a single call. Same-day bookings are available based on vehicle availability.
Do you set up recurring schedules for dialysis patients?
Yes. This is one of our most common services. Call us once with your dialysis clinic schedule and we will coordinate your pickups and returns for every session. We work directly with your clinic on timing.
What happens if my appointment runs long?
Call us and we will adjust your pickup time. We track our bookings and do our best to accommodate delays. Let your driver-attendant know when you arrive at your appointment if you expect a longer wait.
Is wheelchair transportation covered by OHIP or insurance?
It depends on the type of transfer. We recommend confirming with your care team or insurer for your specific situation, but here is a general guide:
Hospital to hospital transfers are typically covered under OHIP when ordered by a physician as medically necessary. Your hospital's discharge planning team can confirm and arrange billing directly.
Long-term care to dialysis transportation from a long-term care home to dialysis appointments is typically covered. The LTC facility's care coordinator usually arranges this.
Hospital to home or home to facility transfers are generally not covered by OHIP. However there are programs that may help:
-
iCare Transportation Fund - a provincial program providing funding assistance for eligible patients who cannot afford non-emergency medical transportation
-
ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) - may cover transportation costs for eligible recipients attending medical appointments
-
Extended health benefits - some employer and private health plans include medical transportation coverage. Check your policy or contact your insurer.
We provide receipts for all trips and can provide documentation to support insurance or program claims. If you are unsure what coverage you may have, call us and we will help point you in the right direction.
